Michael-Profile-Picture

Michael Tyas is co-producer of the, as yet unreleased, feature film One River Many Relations. The film captures the voices of Indigenous Peoples who live downstream from the Alberta oil sands, in the Athabasca delta.

Michael studied video production in South Africa in 2003. He worked on reality television, in 2005, in Los Angeles but found it to be dissatisfying. He was disconcerted by the level of control exercised over the story and found some editorial decisions disrespectful of the subjects. It’s his goal as a videographer to take care to accurately represent the heart and soul of a story.

Michael has Bachelor of Environmental Studies, Honour’s Co-op Option. Combining videography with his background in environmental studies creates a unique mix.

One River Many Relations is his first feature length film. He’s worked on previous projects with First Nations (Alberta) Technical Services Advisory Group, Food Matters Manitoba, and Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation and Mikisew Cree First Nation.

Michael has conducted workshops on how to tell story through video for beginners, in the U. of M., Conservation Lab and to high school kids in Sagkeeng and Grand Rapids MB.

He grew up in Southern Ontario and moved to Winnipeg in 2007, but he truly loves the north and travels to Alberta and NT about once a season. While there, Michael enjoys eating traditional foods, attempting whitewater kayaking, and reconnecting with friends.

Stéphane McLachlan coordinates the Environmental Conservation Lab at the University of Manitoba.

He conducts action-oriented work, along with students, research associates, and other university researchers and in collaboration with Indigenous and rural communities across western and northern Canada.

This work addresses environmental and food injustice confronting these communities and includes studies focusing on environmental contaminants, diet and nutrition, environmental health, sustainable food systems, and adaptive responses to these impacts.

Publically funded by Health Canada, SSHRC, NSERC and CIHR, this work is promoted widely with decision-makers, managers, and other stakeholders. It is published in international peer-review journals and is also made more widely accessible through the use of newsletters, websites, new social media, and high-impact film documentaries.

Stéphane McLachlan is co-producer of the documentaries Seeds of Change and the soon to be released feature film One River Many Relations, a compilations of interviews with Indigenous Peoples and landscapes of the Athabasca delta.
